While this was very well made, it didn’t blow me away the way the glowing reviews suggested it would. It’s obviously a tv show and not a documentary, and it’s possible having read two nonfiction books about the disaster may have lessened some of the impact, but at times I found it obviously and unnecessarily manipulative (the scene with the puppies, for example). It looks really good and the acting was great, but it isn’t a masterpiece. Prestige television , as they say.
I feel for a film with such a reductive and shitty message it should at least have been fun. As it was, I enjoyed the final fight, but that was pretty much it. I don’t think it’s helpful that instead of just reducing one side of the political spectrum to stereotypes they reduce both sides. It’s a really lazy political message, but I could maybe have overlooked that if the movie had been more fun.
