What awful times we live in.
There’s a lot one could say about this film from the colors (those fabrics) to the violence to the class conflicts to the crushing weight of social customs to the fatal blow of machismo meeting sexism but I am mostly struck by Kesa. The film opens with an act of courage on her part (one for which she is not rewarded and in fact loses her life for) and ends with one as well. Throughout it all, her steadfast courage holds her and the film with it.

Though modern iconography has them with scales, tails, and dripping sexual allure, as often presented in mythology sirens were feathered bird women who promised knowledge and relief (things a worn out Odysseus might have been craving). As for Pandora, though her myth is that of the “woman dooms mankind forever” variety, her box did also contain hope as a way for humanity to persevere.
Is there hope in Lulu’s box? Perhaps, but it’s hard to tell if that’s won out…
