La La Land 2016
It's sentimental and cliché and wonderful.
It's the City of Angels. The wild parties, the down-on-her-luck actress, the hopes and dreams; you've seen this all before. But underneath the trappings of an easily-palatable story (which is not, in of itself, a terrible thing), there's an optimism and vivaciousness and passion that's quite affecting, rooted in a dreamier and glossier version of the world than the one we live in. Anyone who has lived in L.A. for a modicum of time…

Arrival 2016
A powerful story for our time.
I was lucky enough to see an early screening of Arrival -- the day after now-President Trump's election. The screening was in a large city, and just outside the theater's walls was a massive protest march. There is hardly a better parallel to this film than that; of fear, of uncertainty, and of humanity's ability to rise above our divisions and unite.I can only hope our real-life divisions resolve themselves as tidily.

The Nice Guys 2016
Bloody brilliant.
Simultaneously funny and violent, director Shane Black knows what he's doing. The Nice Guys is slick and fast paced, dispensing laughs and brutality in equal measure and combining physical gags with quick quips.
Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are also at the top of their game. Gosling, the well-meaning and occasionally competent P.I., joins brass-knuckle-clad Crowe in chasing down a young woman on the run. Twists and turns and comedy galore.
Not to be missed.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising 2016
Everything you expected, if you expected mediocre humor and a gratuitous number of attractive people doing dumb things.
Meh.
