    ★★★★

An exploration of memory and how we lose it. A beautiful film with visually striking sequences and unforgettable shots.

The film is filled with conversations between the two leads that make up the engine of the film, driving the plot forward, reminding me of Stalker or Taste of Cherry. They do sometimes fall into nonsense for me.

There are a few contrived moments that keep the plot going, and the film's pacing falls apart a bit towards the end, I'd gladly rewatch it though, some of its imagery will stick around in my mind for a while as well.

    ★★★

Great acting, particularily surprising from the non-actors which make up the majority of the film's cast.

However, I feel nothing special was done with the subject matter. There's only very superficial exploration of why nomads end up being who they are, almost no exploration of our main character's past or what lead her and the people she meets down this road.

There is, of course, exploration of who they are now, and maybe that's all the film wanted to be.…

    The Phantom Carriage

    ★★★★½

The Phantom Carriage tells the story of a Swedish folktale about how the last person to die on New Year's Eve has to drive Death's carriage for the next year.

I've only seen a few films from the 1920s, but there's one visual effect that's particularly outstanding. The film apparently inspired Ingmar Bergman to make movies and you can see some similarities in the general awkwardness with which some characters behave in order to create an uneasy atmosphere.

The story has some clear A Christmas Carol parallels and makes for an interesting watch, especially considering the film will soon be 100 years old.
