  Just finished the book, and had to see what Ron Howard did with it. The book was much more of a mix between Vance’s personal autobiography, and a more general commentary on the socioeconomic woes of the Appalachian and Rust Belt working class culture — about a 70/30 split I’d say. The movie dealt less with the latter and focused more on telling a strictly biographical—albeit nonlinear—story.

  Went into this movie with an open mind, and hoped to be pleasantly surprised. The problem was I just couldn’t tell what it was trying to be.

   Some pieces felt well done. The art and cinematography was largely pretty interesting, and felt very Wes Anderson-like. Other parts just didn’t land the way they were supposed to. It was never clear wether the movie was supposed to be satire or a genuine superhero comedy.
