Very faithful adaptation from a powerful novel. Powerful performances highlighted by Mary Tyler Moore’s portrayal of Beth. The late 1970s aesthetic of The Holdovers is prevalent ‘as is’ within this 1980 release. Robert Redford’s directorial decision making renders forth an effective narrative with some great aesthetic camera movements. That all being said, I’m still not sure how this beats Raging Bull for best picture in 1980.

Manchester by the Sea 2016
Devastating and gut wrenching. Total loss. No recovery. Walking shadow of what once was. Trapped in the endless loop of regret. Void of emotion because emotion means life but this life is gone. What is left? Manchester by the Sea.

The Brutalist 2024
It was brutal. That was either a director out of their depth, principle actors that got to block their scenes, or an editor that refused to do their job. Minimalism film should not clock in at over 3hr run time. I would have rather there not be an intermission only so the movie could have ended 15 minutes earlier.
