Heavy on the politics, much less about the war itself. I liked that though. It emphasizes how extreme thoughts on race used to be en mass

Matt Damon is straight faced for most of this movie but that’s what makes it good

I think the idea of not telling a loved that they are sick and dying is a very un-American thing, they actually point out in the film that it’s illegal. But you really need to throw that notion out the window when watching this movie. It makes you realize how family can be taken for granted.

Ironically the first Ozu film I see is his last, although if any of his work is nearly as good as this one I look forward to diving into his other films. "An Autumn Afternoon" reflects on growing old and learning to let go of the things you hold so dear. The main character, Hirayama, walks through all points in his life while struggling with the decision of marrying his only daughter off. With no wife to help take care of him, he has to chose loneliness or risk destroying his daughters wife by having her stay home.
