  I went into this film wanting to hate it. It was 2018, Amy Schumer’s “The Leather Special” had altered Netflix’s algorithm, with both critics and casual watchers touting her as the worst comedian of our generation. I was still in high school, mindlessly hopping on the hate train, ready to ridicule Amy’s acting and script to bits.

  Barbie 2023

  Unfortunately one of the worst I’ve seen in a while. Unintentionally hilarious emotional moments, as it’s impossible to take the plights of anyone’s seriously in this film. It’s also ironic how the best character in an overly feminist film is, notably, not a woman. 

  I can’t suspend my disbelief considering this is inspired by a toy company that notoriously manufacturers in third world countries. Knowing an underpaid Chinese woman is tirelessly molding her 400th Barbie doll to meet factory quota, the messaging is tone deaf at best. But hey, I’m just Ken!

  Surprisingly, Viola Davis was not my favorite in this film. Octavia Spencer as Minny was hilarious. Every scene without the maids were a bore, and the emotional beats did not hit as hard as the comedic moments.
