a movie has rarely moved me to the extent of the Brutalist. maybe because it was so deeply personal, maybe because the overarching theme is so universal and relevant today. an absolute masterpiece delivered so graciously.
there was a lot more eyeliner than there was a plot with depth. entertaining? sure. but recycling such a well-respected movie only to beef it up with tacky theatricals, flat dialogue, fleeting characters and ridiculous CGI (baboons and sharks in the colloseum, why??) feels criminal. Unfortunately even Denzel’s performance got crushed under Ridley’s obscenity.
