abysmal dialogue, unbelievable plot points, and a complete lack of character understanding let alone development. I know the actors aren’t the problem because I’ve seen them do well in other things. Some of the shots are gorgeous though, so it gets an extra star.

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) 2021
An exceptional piece that’s almost as moving as the music featured within it. Questlove seamlessly blends the historic events of the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement, and the greater cultural importance of Harlem into the recordings and storytelling around the festival itself. The finding of the festival footage alone is a glorious revelation, and while I’m excited to watch just the festival in its entirety, the storytelling aspect so craftily woven in is a revelation unto itself.
