  Annihilation 2018

  There's this annoying type of dialogue that has crept into modern films that is this nasally, half-mumbling voice somewhere between a whisper and normal conversation. Annihilation has this in abundance because it wants to emphasise how ~serious~ it is.
  In reality, of course, it turns out irritating and is usually the harbinger of lots of uninteresting, stodgy exposition.

  This is a minor point, and it's not to say there's nothing to like about Annihilation - it generally picks up steam…

  The fruity Bowie-like villain was fun, but overall Gatiss again shows a failure to understand what makes ghost stories scary. Rules are made to be broken, but Gatiss breaks them without understanding why they exist in the first place.

  A lot of potential to explore orientalism is lost here. Gatiss instead opts for a subplot about homosexuality, but to be frank I didn't fully get what was going on and I don't care enough to re-watch.

  A fun and engaging animation style alongside Anderson's recognisable cinematography can't save this needless butchering of Dahl's beloved book. The script is banal and a caricature of uninteresting, clichéd children's movies.
