Ava 2020
Disappointingly paint-by-numbers “assassin’s employers turn on them” thriller. The fight choreography isn’t as dynamic as Haywire or Atomic Blonde and it doesn’t have the propulsive energy of a Luc Besson version of the same kind of movie (even when they’re not great), like Lucy or Anna. This is shot much more like a drama that just happens to have a few shootouts, it doesn’t really resemble the lightning paced, frenetic, emotionless Luc Besson thrillers. But the dramatic elements, including subplots about alcohol problems and family secrets and other boring stuff, aren’t done well enough to make you feel anything for Ava or care about her problems.
