The angriest film of the 1970’s. An ode to the hard workin’ fucked over man. A stone-cold, dye-in-the-wool masterpiece. Insane to think Schrader pulled this of with a) this being his directorial debut and b) all the on-set pressures.
It's also such a departure from the rest of Schrader’s written or directed work, while still remaining full of his self-destructive characters. There’s no sense of his intentionally superficial style or God’s lonely man; let alone an inkling of a higher…
