Screenwriting teachers try to drill down the idea for students that dramatic construction starts with "protagonist/antagonist" relationships. The fundamentals of a scene are two people wanting something - and if one gets it, the other can't. People who write romantic comedies hate that because they want to write something sympathetic to both leads and they want both characters to be happy.

I told some California friends, "This is like JoJo Rabbit, but y'know, depressing" and they all gasped and yelled "THAT WAS DEPRESSING!" and I knew they would never ever watch it. I told a New York friend and she dragged a bunch of people to a screening and then they got mad at her. But she loved it.
I feel like a lot of tricks you give people credit for started here. The only thing that really feels gratuitous to me is the kid getting dragged through the swamp. I hope they have the Coogan Act in Belarus.
