The sweetest, strangest film. Many people who watched my short film Mother's Skin compared it to this film so I had to find a way to check it out. While I found it endearing, it also reminded me why there are so few movies about such young children as it can be difficult to really sustain a driving narrative with a protagonist so young. One Hour Photo 2002
In moments this movie really starts to touch upon something interesting and daring, but then it undermines itself by defaulting to conventional Hollywood plot lines and choices. I so wish this movie had fully “gone there” in terms of owning the strange and twisted story it wanted to be. Robin Williams is the highlight in this movie. Where other characters feel stock, his character is nuanced and engaging, full of inner-life. The movie is at its best when it starts to look at loneliness and alienation in our modern consumerist society, but it falls short of making any strong statement about it.
