In moments this movie really starts to touch upon something interesting and daring, but then it undermines itself by defaulting to conventional Hollywood plot lines and choices. I so wish this movie had fully “gone there” in terms of owning the strange and twisted story it wanted to be. Robin Williams is the highlight in this movie. Where other characters feel stock, his character is nuanced and engaging, full of inner-life. The movie is at its best when it starts to look at loneliness and alienation in our modern consumerist society, but it falls short of making any strong statement about it.

Just when I thought nothing could top Donald Sutherland smashing in the face of his replicant self, a dog with a human face appeared on screen. Good times, all around.
