Once Upon a Time in Algeria 2023
Beautifully illustrates the complex reality of Algeria in the early 1960s, especially for Jews. Stuck between the amalgam of identities and rising tensions during the Algerian nationalist movement, the Lisner family story is one known too well by the Jews of Algeria. Even more so, their story is one that resonates with Jews of the greater Sephardi world, who can see reflections of their own difficult history in the mid-1900s throughout North Africa and the Middle East.

imamura masterfully displays trauma’s role in motivating character’s behaviors and actions. Iwao is just a well dressed traumatized serial killer. it’s actually laughable that his motives for killing were unidentified or chalked up to insanity.
