feels actually evil, there’s a depravity to the killings here that feels disturbingly personal that it actually made me uncomfortable. i don’t know how to respond to this

the power of film to reveal hidden things, to allow for new experiences, to see closer to the truth, closer to your truth, to pierce into your heart. anyway, saw a bit too much of myself and my relationship to desire and craving in this, hey ho

Grave of the Fireflies 1988
*absolute fucking dickhead voice* Calling this an anti-war movie is absurd. In theory, it's an anti-idiocy movie, but Takahata bungles even that, turning both kids into martyrs for whom our hearts are meant to bleed.
It’s so easy to forget that the numbers in textbooks, on government reports, were real people like you. Some of them loved fruit drops and rice balls. It’s easy forget this based on real memoirs. It’s easy to forget that Takahata himself survived a US air raid at the age of nine. It’s easy to forget than none of this had to happen.
