"Pink Narcissus" for straight people... in a good way! Astoundingly etherial sets and a tight 60 minutes of dark desiring.
I've always believed Henry James' fiction to be nearly unfilmable—so much of his prose concerns the unseeable and intangible, and his characters' motivations stay brilliantly opaque. But this film and "The Beast" (2024) are changing my mind. Campion's adaptation provides satisfying clarity to the characters and plot/ending—a much more romantic and feminist version than James'. It's much more bittersweet, in a beautiful way, one that doesn't sacrifice subtlety.
(Also the opening Prologue is fascinating, and totally off-beat with the rest of the film.)
