  An inordinate amount of the movie is set in a dark cave which made it difficult to see the nuances of MBB’s performance. Having said that, it was a very thin story; the glow worms had more character development than any of the leads. A waste of cast.

  Clever premise, but ultimately the supernatural elements rob the film of the potential terror that a procedural crime mystery can innately illicit. Borrows heavily from tropes in the genre, giving it a familiarity but lacking the gravitas of its reference films.

  Some films leave an imprint that can best be described as traumatic and this film features several scenes that fit that category for me. Take a central protagonist personified as pure love and thrust them into scenarios where human’s weaponise or shatteringly withhold that love to devastating affect, and then send that innocent on an impossible quest to restore their heart’s desire and the emotional stakes for the viewer are dialled up to max. A fleeting cartoonish and voice-reliant conclusion adds an unexpected tonal shift that is unworthy of this otherwise stunningly realised, provocative and heartbreaking film based on Asimov’s classic.
