Could’ve been something more, but wasn’t. Kind of a nice splice of life sorta thing with a key focus on Hank’s’ character’s family history with other families of different time periods thrown in.

Makes you spare a thought for what came before you and what might come after in a place you hold so many cherished memories. Kind of makes you feel small in a somewhat bittersweet way; this is where so much of what made me who I am…

On a serious note, having had time to stew on this movie…

The sheer quality of filmmaking behind this film, like Eggers’ other movies, is impeccable. His attention to detail and care for the period the story is set in; the visuals, blocking, use of shadow and lighting just elevates the tone and atmosphere to near orgasmic levels of beauty and richness. They really don’t make them like this anymore.

The sheer contrast between this and any superhero movie of the last 10 or so years says so much when you realise this was directed by a fan, for fans, telling a heartfelt, memorable story about a character who happens to be a superhero.

These days, all we get are cash cows churned out by whatever director is cheapest to hire, telling stories about superheroes that happen to be a character, existing purely to set up the next cash cow superhero flick.

Also, finally seeing this in cinema has fulfilled another hole in my life.
