This review is harder to write now that my dad follows me here.
Leaving this movie a second time, I realized it does something that I love; it forces us, as viewers, to reveal something about ourselves in our interpretation of it. There's no way to grapple with the feelings and relationships of the characters in this film without opening your heart just a little bit.

This movie has every opportunity to go wrong. They could have made one character too unlikeable, one explanation too short or long, one scene too sappy. despite all odds it is fucking amazing and beautiful and emotional and exciting. It's a love story and a coming of age story and a sci-fi epic and a comedy, everything (everywhere?) all at once. Also, as if all of that wasn't enough, some of the most impeccably choreographed fight scenes this century. I hope kung fu movies make a comeback because of this. I need to rewatch house of flying daggers.
