Not exactly sure how this film gets its high ratings as such an avant-garde noir film. The whole chiaro-scuro and fog effects are all there in startling fashion but certainly a film like The Third Man should eliminate this film from any further consideration. That said, I did enjoy it and did not get particularly bored with it. The fact that it lasts only about an hour helped.
Fine film and faithful to novel. Isabella Rossellini, with one very short speech turns the whole narrative upside down. If you appreciate papal intrigue this film presents that whole world respectfully and with a sense of dignity. Despite the fact that these are human beings with their own foibles we still get the sense that they are committed to serving the mission of the Church.
I have a short list of my favourite films of all time and have a sneaking suspicion that The Brutalist has made the list. The second half of the film turned me off at first but the more I have considered its significance the more important the film’s narrative structure comes together for me.
