what a trip. wish cage put on his aussie ‘cent for this one— would’ve been five ⭐️ otherwise. commentary on cult culture, fraternity, and there’s a satisfaction that the surfer got what they wanted but maybe not what they needed. love the surge in surrealism and setting in only one location.

director of photography Youssef Ben Youssef is unconventional in using a 3:2 aspect ratio and a deep depth of field to emphasize the location of Quneitra, Syria. actors are blocked for the camera, something so rarely seen and a pay off of being frugal and deliberate about film shot. each frame is meticulously composed, detailing every piece of architecture, character animal or prop. and the multi-minute tracking shots – wow. the movie al-leil الليل (my namesake) is not afraid of the dark – so many scenes are swallowed in darkness, showing the fear and loss of the director's village from israeli occupation.
