Very impressive debut by writer director protagonist Cooper Raiff. If you manage to disregard its absolute whiteness (which usually bodes really well for class privilege, as in this case too), this is actually one of the most sensitive and honest depictions of early college life. Naturalistic dialogues and acting, refreshingly sweet awkwardness and a constant questioning of what it means to wear your heart on your sleeves. As far as heteronormative romcoms go, it's one of the tops.
Is it dramedy? Is it horror? Is it satire? What a remarkable tonality, as the film dances loosely between bergmanesque shots to indie newyorkish tropes to elaborate mirror plays, constantly balancing the humour and banality of daily life with the atrocious oppressions of being a womxn. Very little cringe factor involved, especially considering the time it was made and the fact that a cis male directorial and writing team is behind this underseen gem.
