A City of Sadness 1989
Watched this movie in Taiwan during its limited 4K release for the first time. My grandmother (a-ma), mother, and myself sat in the back of the theater. City of Sadness offers something to every one of its audiences, but the full emotional weight and generational memory could never be fully delivered in translation. This movie’s mastery is truly taken to another level when 3 generations of Taiwanese women are left (silently) weeping when the credits roll.
