I'll have to read Men Without Women but the dynamics remind me a lot of Norwegian Wood, feels very faithful to Murakami's style. Also how cool is it that there's a genuinely interesting Uncle Vanya interpretation within the film like I want to see the whole thing? Watched in 70 mm at Angelika in NYC so an incredible experience even if the film hadn't been good. But for the most part it was! There's definitely a lot going on and there's so many themes that it bites off more than it can chew, but I'm sure additional viewings will cement those more because even in retrospect there's lots of subtle work here that ties things together.
