Brilliant, unsettling comedy about an almost sane man going well and truly round the bend in the course of a cosmically doomed attempt to attend a meeting in Norwich. Dark, almost existential humour masquerading as light farce. The ending is a bit depressing, though a happier outcome would have required some unlikely transformations on the part of the main characters. Cleese did A Fish Called Wanda next, and cracked the code of successful transatlantic comedy. Watched with G.
A good film that could've been a truly great one if only they'd cut the run time by about 30 minutes. Great cast, from the always exceptional Geena Davis to the delightful Bitty Schram (Sharona from "Monk"). A reminder of a better, kinder America. Watched with G, who also enjoyed it.
Abbott and Costello run into walls and slap each other a lot while attempting to catch a murderer in Radio City. Good, silly, old-fashioned fun.
I first watched this as a kid on TV, and remember thinking it was okay, a bit convoluted, maybe not Hitchcock's greatest. Re-watching it in 35mm on a big screen was a whole other experience: beautiful, intense and tragic, like slowly sinking into quicksand ... or drowning in San Francisco Bay.
