Devastating. Probably the best depiction of mental illness and trying to love a person with mental illness I can think of. Marianne-Jean Baptiste and Michele Austin give performances that have such depth and complexity it can be hard to watch. I think what makes Leigh’s best films shake me to my core is that I see so much of myself in his characters’ humanity, especially in their worst moments. It’s because he doesn’t judge his characters, and allows their insecurities…

Sadie McKee 1934
There’s nothing quite like Joan Crawford in her ‘30s imperial phase. I don’t think anyone has ever been more charismatic, more charming, or more beautiful.
The film itself is great, and Clarence Brown knows what his biggest asset is and the film services her tremendously. I could watch it over and over. It’s entertaining, touching, and Joan’s performance is incredible.
Also, I finally get Franchot Tone, an actor that never really did it for me before I saw him alongside Joan. But that’s what she does - she makes everyone better and everything she’s in better. The ultimate star.

No Hard Feelings 2023
On rewatch, it’s pretty clear this is an unimpeachable masterpiece. Wish they gave out Nobel Prizes for movies.
