Myra Savage (Kim Stanley), a self-styled psychic in London, concocts a scheme to gain celebrity. She convinces Billy (Richard Attenborough), her weak-willed husband, to kidnap Amanda Clayton (Judith Donner) the young daughter of wealthy parents (Mark Eden & Nanette Newman). She and Billy will demand money, and then she will go to the parents with extra-sensory messages that will help the police find the child and the ransom. The plan unfolds beautifully, except that after her first visit to the parents,…

This musical comedy should really have been called “The Red Skelton Carnival” as he dominates this film.  A waste of the talents of Esther Williams (who gets star billing) and Howard Keel.  The story revolves around Debbie Telford (Esther Williams), a carnival performer, and her manager, Cornie Quinell (Red Skelton) who are mistaken for a wealthy Texan cattleman (Keenan Wynn) and his sister (Paula Raymond). This is not to everybody's taste and appears to have been panned by the critics.  However, it was beautifully filmed and acted especially Vanessa Redgrave as the older Rose.  Just go with the flow and do not analyse too much.  I found it deeply moving a reminder of man's inhumanity to man.

I have read so many negative reviews on this site, perhaps from people who like action movies, but this is a simple film.  It is basically the story of an elderly man who loses his wife to cancer and decides to travel from John O’Groats to Land’s End entirely by local buses and the people he meets on the way, both good and bad.  Interspersed are memories of life with his wife from when they were first married to when she died.  This is the kind of film that Timothy Spall excels at.  He was superb.
