Unique in its pace. The beauty and poetry in the everyday, in every person, situation. Adam Driver is chiseled warmth, humanity and alert observer of miracles in the mundane. Story lines confound the expected conventions so even small scenes surprise. The ending is sublimely strange and lovely. After this second viewing, I also think there’s a hidden thread on living as a stoic.
It’s painful to give this less than 5 stars, given the effort and commitment that went into it. I leaned towards 3.5 but gave it 4 out of loyalty and hope that Part 2 will be better. I avoided this film on the assumption that it would be another mindless Marvel. I was more than pleasantly surprised — it was fresh, innovative, visually appealing with great action set in an interesting story. Ryan Reynolds, not my favorite, was perfect for this, and he produced it.
