Overall I thought the movie was okay, but it was kind of all over the place. One minute you’re watching Rodney Alcalá attack and murder someone and then Sheryl’s struggling acting career. It felt like I was watching two different movies at times. Anna Kendrick’s acting was flat with the exception of the parking lot scene ( no spoilers). I will say Nicolette Robinson’s and Daniel Zovatto’s performance’s were on point. I appreciate the attempt to tell this story in a new way and I’m glad they didn’t spend a lot of time reenacting the murders. The victims deserve better.
This film is deeply disturbing but extremely well done. A slow burn that builds suspense and does it all without blood and gore. It relies on strong cinematography and writing skills to boot. I still have a lingering pit in my stomach after watching this movie. The opening courtroom scene is drawn out but it sets the scene for the reminder of the movie. This is not your average serial killer movie.
I’ve watched this movie several times. It’s both heartbreaking and beautiful. A mother’s quest to find closure that doesn’t really exist. A glimpse into how grief transforms us in unexpected ways. And strangely how it teaches us how to truly live.
