I really wish I could see the stage notes Josh Hartnett was following, because I can only assume they said "I know we just said he was a convincing liar, but play it like a man who's never told a lie in his life...and Ham it up."
Honestly, this was fine. It's pretty fun, schlocky, nonsense, and mostly a vehicle for Shamalan's daughter's music career (clearly not acting). And that is fine.
Never has a more expensive film felt like it was crapped out by AI. Horrible dialogue, questionable casting, pathetic costume design, and never has an adaption missed the vibe of it's source more.
Please do better, Netflix. Try harder, Russos.
I think it's worth a watch - it might beat your expectations slightly, but mine were low. I'm really here for 100% commitment to an idea, and a big old swing with insane studio budgets:
- It looks interesting, weird colours and costume and shit everywhere
- The first Musical number had me jazzed, and fully onboard for a musical comic movie.
- The cast are absolutely going for it.. Phoenix is really great, so is Gaga, and Gleeson is…
