  I plan to watch this film a second time but here are my initial thoughts: 

  Things I liked: 

  Phoenix’s performance (obviously)

  Lawrence Sher’s cinematography 

  The score

  The aesthetic 

  The tone 

  The almost paradoxical motif of the stairs resembling Arthur’s mental state
