It has been a while since I’ve seen a Miyazaki film to the point where I almost forgot how amazing he really is. I haven’t seen Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke since I was a teenager and after seeing this movie, I am have an immense urge to revisit them. With that caveat, this might be his best, in that it feels like he has refined his craft up to this point.

I don't remember a lot of this film but will always remember saying that it has some of the best flirting scenes I've seen.
Cinematography is great. Yang is good at layering multiple story arcs with obvious parallels and relationships. His pacing is slow and reserved much like his characters which allows for you to almost think in their place or watch them do it. There is a hint of this late 90’ to early 2000’s blatant “here is something profound” dialogue which plagues a lot of oscar baiting movies but can mostly be excused with the very human sincerity of the acting.
