Bong Joon-ho’s American films almost feel like a side project to his actual career. His Korean films, like Memories of Murder, Mother, and Parasite are masterclasses in suspense. Meanwhile, Snowpiercer, Okja, and now Mickey 17 feel more like live-action cartoons. And like side projects often are, the American films are playful, idiosyncratic, and not for everyone.
