Only the River Flows 2023
The excessive cigarette smoking and black leather jackets paid a nice homage to noir cinema. I also really enjoyed the films depiction of a gritty 1990s rural China, which was all beautifully shot through a 16mm lens.
Wei’s decision to stray away from depicting the gory details of the murders also increased the film’s overall sense of nostalgia and (to me at least) felt like a subtle nod to the conventions of the Hayes Code (although maybe I’m looking into…
