  Cool concept and a solid family drama with an interesting twist. I think the production of this is probably a lot more interesting than the movie itself, but considering its short runtime, it’s certainly worth the watch

  For something called “The Substance” this film sure lacked any.

  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against mindless fun, especially in the horror genre, and I think this works fine as a comedy in parts. I don’t even really care that it’s a Cronenberg derivative retelling of Dorian Gray. That’s fine.

  But this thing should not have run a single second more than 90 minutes. It’s funny and gross in the best ways when it’s hitting its stride, but the rest of it is just such a slog, and the idea that it has anything serious to say is comical.
