It’s obvious this movie was made in 2006 (derogatory) but man oh man did Forest Whitaker give the performance of a lifetime, I can’t think of anyone who could’ve delivered a better one.

I really like how the film focuses on the Hoss family’s experience and reactions to living next door to a concentration camp instead of just telling a standard story of the Holocaust from the perspective of a prominent Nazi; in a-lot of ways this is more effective and shocking. Marvelous, mesmerizing, grotesque, I’m dizzy just trying to recall what I just watched. It felt like being at one endless party, a party I don’t necessarily want to be at, but a party nonetheless. It was fun, and much as it is a love letter to Hollywood and cinema as a whole, it felt just as equally to be an indictment of the whole business. There were scenes that were difficult to get through, specifically in which Tobey Maguire is present, but I was thrilled all the same. Diego Calva, you’ve made my week god bless you 🫡

I’m not much of a horror fan, but if I were I’d have given it five stars. The cinematography was beautiful, the plot a little unexpected (especially as it relates to casting, it’ll make sense when you see the film). Overall it is a very good horror movie. I give it three stars because it kept me up last night, and I really couldn’t sleep. So if you like that sort of thing, go for it? Also it was partly inspired by Jane Eyre, so that helps.
