Little or no score but the images, shots and sequences are alive with a music and a rhythm of their own that you don't even notice that there isn't any actual music.
Hypnotic, melancholic, beautiful, erotic and inevitable. Going back and forth in time and mind and rich excavation and contemplation of history, themes and ideas. Perhaps the 'slowest' film I have seen which manages to contain so much melodrama and emotions. Coal never looked so bright!

Brother 1997
Soviet version of the classic story: our young anti-hero coming of age and coming to the big bad dangerous city and finding greed, corruption, violence, man eat man society while at the same time keep his sanity, morality, conscience and desires in intact and in check.
It could have been boring, cheesy and silly but instead stylishly directed with absurdist humor, solid Soviet alt-rock soundtrack and a our awkward, poignant, likeable lead (Bodrov Jr. is ideal in the role) while at the same time not shying away from ugly, unfair, grim and violent realities.

Leigh tricked us, in the first half, in making us believe that this is a laugh-out loud comedy of a merely obnoxious lady. But oh boy, how things turn. Timely, heart-breaking and devastating portrait of how traumas, resentments, bitterness and lack (or inability) of communication and willingness to be vulnerable, ruins us and makes us even more lonely, depressed and angry (a vicious cycle.) MJB firing in all cylinders as a women on the verge of not-merely-just-a-nervous-breakdown.
