  This movie shines, but not like a diamond. Like a coin at the bottom of a fountain. It reveals a hidden and shifting past through a serene and structured present. This might seem like I’m actually bothering to write a proper review and that might just be the case. Shows you how good the film is that I actually bothered.

  I have watched this so many times and it’s one of my all time faves and undoubtedly Kitano’s best. Not perfect - not even my highest rated film on here but it is a perfect viewing experience. Equal parts hilarious, barbaric and poignant. And, in my not so humble opinion, Joe Hisaishi’s best work. Surpassing even his Ghiblian efforts.
