A gem, specific and faithful to time and place. A landscape in which a story occurs rather than vice versa. A stellar Irish cast, led by Barry Ward, serve with accuracy and lack of ego. A triumph from Pat Collins.

P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang 1982
A gem from the early days of Film4 and Channel 4. The combined talents of Jack Rosenthal and Michael Apted fashion a nostalgic delight with an exceptional young cast and Alison Steadman (not much older) in charge. The piece de resistance is the narration furnished by the matchless John Arlott.

Lincoln 2012
A gem. Not to gainsay the immense performances in roles big and small, the careful direction, the contributions of all creatives especially John Williams' score and Janusz Kaminski's Caravaggio-like pictures, the real star is Tony Kushner's script (from Doris Kearns Goodwin's book) - muscular, agile, always speakable, a model of clarity and revelation.

Dance First 2023
A pleasant surprise after a slew of poor advance reviews. A smart, knowing take on the less-than-thrilling life (with one violent exception) of a brilliant writer. Gabriel Byrne is captivating as Himselves and there is excellent support particularly from Aidan Gillen and Maxine Peake.
