A bit disappointed that Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg (a neurotic Jew in the style of a 21st-century Woody Allen) are playing the same roles as always. At the same time, I felt that they reflected conflicts that usually take place within a single person. The scenes in Warsaw and the memorial site in the summer light looked exactly as I remember them, which made them very relatable for me. Some conflicts didn’t feel deep enough to me, though it’s…
The image is, of course, very striking. Besides the scenes with fire and the final scene, it feels to me as if the entire film was in black and white, which fits the overall aesthetic. The acting, apart from that of Willem Dafoe, was very stiff. Why do Germans speak with a British accent? The morbid scenes, such as the depiction of female desire, were at times creepier than the jump scares. However, what shocked me the most were the antigypsyist scenes early in the film with the dancing and singing gypsies—very stereotypical and racist.
