Blonde 2022
A reductive catalyst for conversation regarding fame and the male gaze. It’s like this film was inspired by a half-baked metaphor of shredding The Mona Lisa—an exploration of a timeless icon in distress. Marilyn symbolizes something more evolved than The Mona Lisa, and something more familiar. This film does nearly nothing to highlight the complexities of one of film culture’s most successful pioneers. The haphazard directional Dadaism (one of my favorite art movements) doesn’t do anything to connect an audience to what’s happening on screen. The blatant inspirations from other surrealist directors fell completely flat imo.

Videodrome 1983
Been putting off watching this film. Finally got around to it, and wow. Kind of cliché to say “ahead of its time,” but it earns it. There’s some connection to be made about sex and technology here that I haven’t fully figured out. Nonetheless, it’s an explorative and perverse take on media consumption and I’m about it.

Roma 2018
This film is incredible. Its impact, however, begs my attention. It demanded conversations to be had in Mexico about class, race, inequality, and other such matters of immediate relevance. I think this film will be looked back on for years to come. Alfonso Cuaron is a treasure. As a person of Mexican heritage, I look up to him.
