  Georgia and I caved. Did the whole double premiere gig at mid-sized mall cinema in Romania. She preferred Oppenheimer, I preferred Barbie. Our diverging tastes working bizarrely well for this one particular cultural event.

  Where Barbie works best is a complete disregard of the established conventions expected from self-serious modern cinema through campy nods to Hollywood classics. Part of me was also thrilled my the implications of the future for big budget films, Barbie could open the door…

  Not usually the kind of I tend to gravitate towards but this film but despite conforming to the typical gross-out humour it smartly subverts aspects of its genre. I also found it walks the line perfectly between wacky and grounded which makes for a pleasant experience. A standout amongst its peers.

  Stylistically awesome with an amazing soundtrack but I think the narrative drift ultimately doesn’t work in its favour. Gregg Araki you have my heart. - edit 25/6 felt the need to bump up the score a week later because this goddam film has permeated into my consciousness
