  Ava DuVernay returns to her indie roots and makes her best film to date with this deeply personal and intimate epic that infuses big ideas and nuance. It’s a complex film that is anchored by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s stirring performance.  She has her big moments of discovery but moves us with her quiet internal life - that’s the best in craft. Jon Berenthal and Niecy Nash-Betts support her beautifully.  The audience rises to its feet at stories end.
