The Beast 2023
There’s a lot to like here but the “Hollywood” scenes were very obviously shot in downtown LA in a way that didn’t feel intentional. Also the person behind me at the screening kept snickering like he was above the movie. Get over yourself, person at Vidiots in Eagle Rock!

I didn’t hate it. Technical aspects were pretty unimpeachable, performances were good, the final act was genuinely thrilling, and to an extent it was smart that it didn’t tell you what the conflict was about, what the President’s politics were, etc. What remained from that lack of perspective, though, was a bland “war bad” message that left a bitter Enlightened Centrist both-sidesist taste in my mouth.
Garland’s recent media appearance chiding the left for not doing electoralism really gave the game away. Art is given meaning by the audience, but on the other hand, don’t tell people how to watch your movie.
