  A story with fascinating potential told in all the wrong ways. Far too much unnecessary era-setting montage early on, and a story structure afraid of losing attention if there isn’t an action scene in the first two minutes. De Niro was genuinely great, even if half of his lines were phrases ripped straight out of The Untouchables, The Godfather or Goodfellas. But hey, it was an attempt at a classic Mafia movie and I enjoyed that.

  This knocked me for six. Never expected such a delicate and resonant exploration of loneliness and family. 

  Also loved how the ‘Power of Love’ was allowed to breathe at the end, before the credits actually rolled. Forced everyone at the cinema to sit and listen for 30 seconds before jumping out of their seats to go on seeing the credits.
