Script and plot are perfectly standard, like Gigan level standard but something about the whole rest of the production really puts it a bit above for me. I actually kinda felt for the humans here, didn’t feel overstuffed by Megaguirus showing up while the humans already had a plan going, liked the whole story setup about Godzilla stealing radiation. Having a greater knowledge of film now, I’m seeing so many of the inspirations that I didn’t notice as a child even though I haven’t really seen any of the adventure serials. The biggest one being that Nazi who is so obviously supposed to be a Peter Lorre-type character.
Of course great filmmaking, just stupendous, great shots, great music, acting, etc etc

I’m realizing now that the structure of the five men who each have 100 ryo is probably an excuse to cram in as many battles from the manga as possible while also making sense in the story of a single film. Again, great screenplay by Koike.

Although Kurosawa had some strong outings with Sanshiro Sugata and One Wonderful Sunday, I think that thematically this is probably where he found his place as a director. I’ve still got some more early ones to watch before I say for sure but for now I feel it’s correct.
