Colonial claws dig deep, and they never quite let go.

This is a criminally underseen and underrated portrait of 20th century Cairbbean power dynamics masquerading as a somewhat messy sun-soaked detective thriller.

Our protagonist Quinn (a young Denzel Washington, oozing effortless charm and authority alike in such spades you forget the wonky accent) is no stranger to the machinations of a post-colonial Caribbean island. As chief of police he's close to the ruling class, made up of foreign whites and…

    Streets of Fire

    ★★★½

What should be a rock noir masterpiece is severely hampered by Michael Paré's sleepwalking, zero charisma leading man performance. Amy Madigan should have been the lead/love interest, or even better, get a time machine to have late '90s Keanu in the role of Tom Cody, and you'd have a 5 star film. Incredible soundtrack and visuals of soaked streets as well as stellar supporting performers though.

Mad Heidi is an impressive crowd-funded project, and the passion that went into it was evident both on screen and at the premiere screening I went to.

The film is hard for me to rate, because there is a big discrepancy between what works and what doesn't, and the accomplishment of making a passion project such as this from the ground up should be celebrated regardless. So I decided to break up my review into three parts.

What an annoying little hedgehog Daniel Radcliffe is in this. The Lost City was mostly mildly amusing to me, with a few standout jokes. Even though as a whole it wasn't very good, I wish there were more films made in the same vein that go for comedy mixed with globetrotting adventure - preferably shot on location as much as possible.
