A soft take on a hard person. She was a brilliant and one of a kind writer who longed for love but her relationship to her mother and alcohol (and her racism and antisemitism in later life) are played down. But also a fascinating look at NYC lesbian culture in the 1950s and the stress and joy in it all. It definitely made me want to rewatch “Carol” and “Strangers on a Train.” Shitty people can create great art. I’m okay with that. The film wants to leave her with a kinder legacy. But this documentary needed a bit more bite.

Gas Food Lodging 1992
Once upon a time, the only way I knew what movies to see were from reading Sassy magazine’s film reviews. They flipped over this one and honestly, it blew my 16 year old mind. A working mom and her two daughters (Brooke Adams, Ione Skye, Fairuza Balk) fall in and out of love and fight with each other, and find fantasy and hope in a sleepy desert town. I even bought the soundtrack, which is magnificent. One of those tiny gems that changes your life.
